Allergic rhinitis (Hayfever) usually occurs in children older than 2 years. Symptoms may include nasal congestion, runny nose, swelling of intranasal structures, and itchy, watery eyes. Intranasal corticosteroid sprays have been effective for treatment.
Medications include:
Nasonex – recommended for older than 2 years of age
Flonase – for children older than 4 years of age
Rhinocort – for children older than 6 years of age
As these meds are topical, they carry no systemic side affects such as growth delays.
Daily dosage is 1 to 2 sprays in each nostril.
For more significant allergy symptoms, an antihistamine and/or eyedrops may be recommended.
